Legal UpdatesGood News From FranceIn an endeavor to bring French conveyancing costs in line with those of Germany, the UK and the USA, the Minister of Finance has eliminated or reduced several contributory taxes.Towards the end of last year, with the elimination of the Taxe Regionale of 1.6% of the purchase price, the remaining Droit Départementale of 4.20% and Taxe Communale of 1.20%, amounted to an average of around 6%. In a more recent announcement, to take effect from 15 September 1999, the Droit Départementale has been reduced to 3.60%, and the Taxe Communale to 1.20%. Taking into account the elimination of the Taxe Regionale last year, and these latest reductions, the legal costs involved in the purchase of a property costing 500,000 Frs will be lower by about 14,000 Frs.
